NYC Foot Infection Specialist

Receive expert treatment for your foot infection

Your foot can become infected in a variety of different ways. Many types of podiatric infections primarily affect the skin or toenails and, while they can cause significant discomfort or pain, may not seriously threaten your overall health. However, certain infections, such as osteomyelitis, may present more serious risks, particularly in children, elderly people, and people with diabetes.

Some people may also be more prone to developing foot infections than others. People with diabetes, for example, may develop them through open wounds in their feet that they cannot notice due to diabetic nerve damage. Contagious foot infections such as athlete’s foot, on the other hand, are more likely to affect people who frequent places such as gym locker rooms and public swimming pools in bare feet.

Regardless of the type, severity, or cause of your foot infection, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center’s expert podiatrists can help. We can provide you with an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your infection, identify risk factors, and determine the right course of treatment for you.

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a contagious fungal infection that commonly affects people who come into direct contact with the fungus with their bare feet. It often spreads in warm, moist locations such as gym locker rooms, saunas, public swimming pools, or showers.

Toenail Fungal Infections

This type of infection develops when fungi enter one of your toenails, which may occur due to an open wound. Like Athlete’s foot, it spreads most easily in warm, moist environments. The infection causes the toenail to thicken and become discolored over time, as well as develop an unpleasant odor.

Plantar Warts

These growths typically form on the sole of the foot due to human papillomavirus (HPV). Plantar warts spread in a similar manner as fungal infections as well as through direct contact with a wart on another person. They may eventually go away on their own, but can be painful and disruptive to your ability to walk while they last; a podiatrist can remove them.

Soft Tissue and Bone Infections

Bone infections (osteomyelitis) can occur due to an infection reaching the bone through the bloodstream or an open wound that exposes the bone to germs. Osteomyelitis can lead to bone damage or loss, particularly in children, elderly people, and people with diabetes. A podiatric surgeon can treat bone infections through a combination of surgery and intravenous antibiotics.
