Bronchial Thermoplasty
Jamaica Hospital is one of the few hospitals in the NYC area to offer bronchial thermoplasty to patients suffering from severe asthma. Bronchial thermoplasty is the first ever non-drug therapy being used to treat individuals who are at least 18 years old and whose asthma is not well controlled with inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta agonists, despite using their pulmonary medicine as instructed.
The innovative and minimally invasive procedure uses thermal energy to permanently heat and shrink thickened muscle that surrounds the airways. The lung disease treatment is broken into three different sessions, each scheduled three weeks apart
Bronchial thermoplasty complements standard asthma medications and can provide patients with an improved quality of life.
