Queens Foot Deformity Specialists

Work with our podiatrists to treat or correct your foot deformity

A foot deformity is any condition that alters the shape or structure of your foot into one that is painful or uncomfortable. This can happen due to a variety of causes, such as a fracture or misaligned bone, wear and tear over time, genetics, or a combination of these factors. Foot deformities generally will not correct themselves. Depending on where and when they occur, they may even negatively impact your physical development and cause additional complications.

Some of the most common foot deformities include flatfeet, hammertoes, bunions, clubfoot, and high arches. If you suffer from any of these conditions, the right treatment approach for you will depend on the severity of your condition, how long you have had it, and where the deformity is specifically located.

The Queens foot deformity specialists at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center can accurately diagnose your condition and help you find the right treatment approach. Whether your deformity requires special bracing and orthotics or surgery, we have the expertise to help you heal and give you the comfort and mobility you deserve.

Flatfeet

This condition (also known as flatfoot) causes the arches of the feet to flatten when pressure is placed on them, as may occur while walking. Flatfeet is typically painless, but in some cases can lead to discomfort or pain in the heel or arches. Treatments may include orthotic arch supports, stretching, and physical therapy.

Hammertoes

A hammertoe is affected by an imbalance of the muscles, ligaments, and tendons that straighten the toe, leading to a bend in the toe’s middle joint. This may cause pain while moving the toe. Additionally, corns and calluses can develop due to friction between this toe and and the others around it. Physical therapy, roomier shoes, and orthotic inserts may help, but certain cases may require surgery.

Bunions and Bunionettes

Bunions are lumps of bone that form in the joint at the base of your big toe, often causing a swollen, sore bump on the outside of the affected area; bunionettes cause similar symptoms in the joint at the base of the little toe. Pain and pressure from bunions and bunionettes can be relieved through changing to more comfortable shoes, bunion pads, orthotic inserts, over-the-counter pain medication, and ice, but surgery may be necessary in some cases.

Clubfoot

Clubfoot is a type of foot deformity that is present from birth and causes a baby’s foot to be twisted out of its normal position. It can occur in one or both feet and, while it does not generally cause discomfort or pain on its own, can make walking more difficult. It can often be treated through physical therapy, casting, and minor surgery, but severe cases may require more invasive surgery.

High Arches

High arches often cause pain and discomfort in the feet due to additional stress and pressure. They may also make finding comfortable shoes more difficult and increase your risk for other podiatric conditions, including plantar fasciitis, hammertoes, and metatarsal fractures. High arches are often treated through orthotic inserts, bracing, ice, and over-the-counter pain medication, but may require surgery if conservative treatment is ineffective.
