The Emergency Department at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in NYC is a fully equipped, comprehensive treatment area offering state-of-the-art patient care. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, treating over 117,000 patients annually.

 

Our Queens emergency room is staffed with an expert team of board-certified emergency medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and nurse assistants, along with robust support staff, including respiratory therapists, social workers, and case managers, all dedicated to one goal: providing high-quality, compassionate patient care in a safe environment.

Quality Care for Queens

Our emergency hospital in NYC has an electronic medical record (EMR) system that enables us to view outside health records, as well as those within the MediSys system (Flushing Hospital and Jamaica Hospital).

Additionally, we have a Women’s Health treatment area within our department exclusively for women’s health needs.

Pediatric Emergency Department

Our child-friendly department, including patient triage and waiting room, is separate from our adult emergency hospital in NYC and was designed to minimize the anxiety children may have when visiting the center. Inside, our asthma treatment area includes comfortable lounge chairs and TVs. It is staffed by board-certified pediatricians who specialize in emergency care for children of all ages, treating medical conditions of all severity levels.

ER Doctor in Triage

To facilitate faster care and decrease wait times, an ER doctor is stationed in the waiting room of our Queens emergency center to treat patients and address their needs. Certain patients may be discharged without requiring further testing or evaluation.

Fast Track Center (“Urgent Care”)

Our Department of Ambulatory Care provides excellent outpatient services in a welcoming setting. We offer primary care and specialty services in Queens, New York. Jamaica Hospital’s knowledgeable staff ensures every visit is smooth and supportive.

Chest Pain Center

Our unique six-bed unit, located within our emergency hospital in NYC, facilitates more rapid evaluation of patients with heart problems. It is equipped with continuous electrocardiographic monitoring for all of its patients, along with centralized monitoring. This unit provides immediate evaluation, stabilization, and treatment for those in need, including patients brought in by ambulance.

Geriatric Emergency Department

Our new six-bed unit is dedicated specifically to our elderly patients who need emergency care. Our patients in this unit have easy access to food, drinks, and mobility aids (canes, walkers, etc.). Our physicians and nurses for this unit have received additional training in geriatric-based concerns. Accredited by the American College of Emergency Physicians, this unit within our emergency hospital in NYC adopts multiple patient care initiatives that enhance the care we provide our geriatric patients. We are the only accredited geriatric emergency department in Queens and one of only four in all of NYC.

Comprehensive Diagnostic Abilities

Our Queens emergency room contains the full spectrum of imaging capabilities, including two X-ray suites with two portable X-ray machines, a dedicated CT scanner in the ER, an ultrasound suite, 24/7 MRI availability, and four portable ultrasound machines. For our critically ill patients, we have a small laboratory within our emergency hospital in NYC, which provides us with immediate blood results. We were awarded a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. This award signifies our commitment to the highest level of imaging quality, safety, and care.

Clinical Ultrasound Program in the ER

Our Queens emergency department has four portable ultrasound machines. This bedside tool enhances the diagnostic abilities of the provider and produces more rapid patient care. Our ultrasound program is accredited by the American College of Emergency Physicians, reflecting our quality, patient safety, communications, responsibility, and clarity regarding the use of emergency ultrasound.

The Emergency Department Level 1 Trauma Center

Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is verified as a Level 1 Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons and has received this designation from New York State. The Level 1 status is the highest level of distinction. It reflects the dedication of our emergency room trauma center to providing exceptional care for our injured patients in Queens and our numerous resources in ensuring this commitment.

ER Doctor in Triage

Our new Cardiovascular Interventional Suite offers the latest and most advanced technologies in managing all types of acute heart attacks and cardiogenic shock. Our interventional cardiologists, cardiac nurse practitioners (NPs), and cardiac nurses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to provide timely, expedient care. We are one of only four emergency hospitals in NYC with such capability. Additionally, we have catheter-directed therapy for severe cases of pulmonary embolism. We received the Silver Performance Achievement Award from the American College of Cardiology and the Gold Plus Achievement Award in Heart Failure (the highest level achievement possible) from the American Heart Association in recognition of our high standard of care for heart attack patients.

Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center

As a Designated Primary Stroke Center, our Queens emergency department has a team of experts, including neurologists, stroke coordinators, emergency physicians, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, and neurointerventionalists, all dedicated to providing the latest treatments for stroke patients, including thrombolytic therapy and mechanical thrombectomy. We are one of only three emergency hospitals in NYC to offer this exceptional capability, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are proud to be awarded the Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award and Target Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. This highest possible category award recognizes our excellent stroke care.

Psychiatric Emergency Department

The team of mental health professionals in our Queens psychiatric emergency room provides consultative services to all ER patients having immediate mental health-specific needs. The Department of Psychiatry treats patients in need of mental health services through its psychiatric emergency department, extended observation unit, inpatient units, and mobile crisis outreach programs.

Jamaica Rx (in-hospital retail pharmacy)

This full-service pharmacy is in the main lobby of our emergency hospital, serving our patients and community in NYC. Patients discharged from the emergency department can conveniently fill and pick up their prescriptions without leaving the hospital. Jamaica Rx also offers a concierge service, including free bedside consultation and delivery of medications for our hospital patients being discharged home.
