Find out more »Tai Chi for Arthritis, developed by Dr. Paul Lam at the Tai Chi for Health Institute (TCHI), is a specialized program designed to harness the benefits of Tai Chi, particularly focusing on the Sun style. This approach is chosen for its effectiveness in promoting relaxation, balance, and its accessibility for older adults. The program emphasizes movements that cater to both sides of the body, incorporating turns to facilitate forward and backward mobility. Each session, led by a TCHI Board-certified instructor, is structured to include the following components: • Warm-up and cool-down exercises • Progressive learning of one or two movements per lesson, eventually covering the six basic core movements and six advanced extension movements • Instruction in breathing techniques • Integration of Tai Chi principles aimed at enhancing physical and mental balance To accommodate older participants and individuals with arthritis, movements are performed at a higher stance and can be modified to address mobility limitations. Participants can even begin the practice seated if needed. The outcomes of Tai Chi for Arthritis are comprehensive, encompassing: • Improved balance • Increased muscular strength • Enhanced mobility • Greater flexibility • Better psychological well-being • Reduction in pain levels • Fall prevention The program’s target audience extends to adults with or without arthritis, rheumatic diseases, or related musculoskeletal conditions. It is suitable for individuals with varying degrees of joint involvement and back pain, catering to those with mild to severe conditions. Additionally, Tai Chi for Arthritis is beneficial for adults at risk of falling, providing a holistic approach to physical health and well-being.
