Prediabetes is a medical condition where a person has glucose levels that are higher than normal but not high enough to indicate diabetes. One in three Americans has prediabetes; that is 86 million people. Prediabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.
Luckily, you can take action and reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease. Lifestyle changes like healthy eating, physical activity help achieve moderate weight loss. This can greatly reduce the risk of diabetes.
Jamaica Hospital Medical Center offers a free program to treat patients at risk of developing diabetes. The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) was created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and was adopted by the hospital to help people with prediabetes to manage their health.
The results of Diabetes Prevention Program have been great! Studies show that patients can lower their risk of diabetes by 58%. Adults older than 60 years were able to reduce their risk of diabetes by 71%.
