The Department of Prehospital Care provides emergency ambulance service to the communities serviced by Jamaica Hospital Medical Center through the New York City 911 system. Highly skilled emergency medical technicians and paramedics provide basic and advanced life support care 24-hours each and every day.

An additional function of the Department of Prehospital Care is the Medical Bike Unit which was formed in 1996. The Medical Bike Unit consists of specially trained Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics who respond to emergency calls on bicycles. As first responders, outfitted with full-equipped mountain bikes, two-way radios, portable cellular telephones, medical supplies, oxygen, and a cardiac defibrillator, the Bike Medics often arrive at emergencies before conventional ambulance crews, and perform life saving care when seconds count. The Medical Bike Unit also provides dedicated medical coverage for large special events throughout the city including charity bike rides and walks, and the Bike New York Great Five Boro Bike Tour.

With a history of providing ambulance services to the community dating back to the early 1900’s, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is among the largest hospital-based ambulance operators in the city of New York.
