What is Family Medicine?
The specialty of Family Medicine is centered on lasting, caring relationships with patients and their families. The family practice physician integrates the biological, clinical and behavioral sciences to provide continuing and comprehensive family medicine. They are dedicated to treating the whole person, which is achieved by developing an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focusing on continuous integrated care.
Unlike other specialties that are limited to a particular organ or disease, family medicine physicians receive special training in caring for newborns, children, adults and seniors. They offer quality care for an individual or for the whole family, serving all ages and addressing all types of healthcare concerns. The Family Medicine Program at Jamaica Hospital also has the unique opportunity of serving the most culturally-rich patient populations in the country and the entire staff has been specially trained to meet those diverse needs.
Established in 1978, the Department of Family Medicine has been treating the men, women and children of South East Queens for decades. Our physicians serve a vital role in the wellness of our community by treating patients in both an inpatient and outpatient setting at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. While there are similarities between family medicine and other primary care specialties, a family practice physician has an unparalleled opportunity to have an impact on the health of an individual patient by treating them throughout their lifetime.
Family Medicine Center
The Morton Safran Family Medicine Center at Jamaica Hospital, located at 133-03 Jamaica Avenue is an ideal setting for the entire family to receive care. The center offers convenient early morning and weekend hours and provides same day visits for urgent care needs for patients of all ages, including newborns, infants, children, adolescents, adults (including maternity care) and geriatric patients in the community. Residents and attending physicians work side-by-side and are assisted by a strong support team including a registered nurse, assistants, a social worker, a dietician, a diabetic educator, and administrative staff. Our residents are responsible for the care of their own panel of continuity patients under the supervision of the faculty. The Family Medicine Center consists of 34 examination rooms and four fully equipped procedure suites for office-based surgical procedures, full spectrum reproductive health care, and osteopathic manipulation. The Center features an ophthalmology suite, x-ray facilities, and an on-site laboratory.
