The Emergency Department at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is a fully-equipped, comprehensive treatment area, offering state-of-the-art patient care. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to over 117,000 patients treated annually. We are staffed with an expert team of Board-certified Emergency Medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse assistants along with robust support staff including respiratory therapists, social workers, case managers whom are all dedicated towards one goal: providing high-quality, compassionate patient care in a safe environment. We have an electronic medical record (EMR) system that enables us to view outside health records, as well as those within the MediSys system (Flushing Hospital and Jamaica Hospital). Additionally, there is a Women’s Health treatment area within our department exclusively for our female patients having women’s health needs. Our recent Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades (given to the top 10% of hospitals) reflects our commitment towards upholding high patient safety standards.

Our child-friendly department including patient triage and waiting room, is separate from the adult emergency department, and was designed to minimize the anxiety children may have when visiting the hospital. Inside, our asthma treatment area includes comfortable lounge chairs and TVs. It is staffed by Board-Certified pediatricians who specialize in emergency care for children of all ages treating medical conditions of all levels of severity.ER Doctor in Triage
To facilitate faster care and decrease wait times, an ER doctor is stationed in the waiting room to treat patients, and address their needs. Certain patients may be discharged without requiring further testing or evaluation.Fast Track Center (“Urgent Care”)
This area within our emergency department is dedicated towards patients requiring urgent medical care. Our providers are focused on providing rapid evaluation and treatment to reduce your wait time, while having access to all capabilities of the entire hospital should your situation require it.Chest Pain Center
Our unique six-bed unit located within the emergency department facilitates more rapid evaluation of patients with heart problems. It is equipped with continuous electrocardiographic monitoring for all of its patients along with centralized monitoring. This unit provides immediate evaluation, stabilization and treatment for those in need, including patients brought in by ambulance.Geriatric Emergency Department:

Geriatric Emergency Department
Our new six-bed unit within the Emergency Department is dedicated specifically towards our elderly patients whom need emergency care. Our patients in this unit have easy access to food and drink, and mobility aids (canes, walkers, etc.) as our physician and nurse for this unit have received additional training in geriatric-based concerns. Accredited through the American College of Emergency Physicians, this unit adopts multiple patient care initiatives which enhance the care we provide our geriatric patients. We are the only accredited geriatric emergency department in Queens, and one of only four in all of NYC.Comprehensive Diagnostic Abilities
Our emergency department contains the full spectrum of imaging capabilities including two X-ray suites with two portable X-ray machines, a dedicated CT scanner in the ER, an ultrasound suite, 24/7 MRI availability, and four portable ultrasound machines. For our critically-ill patients, we have a small laboratory in the ER which provides us with immediate blood results. We were awarded as a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology, signifying our commitment towards the highest level of imaging quality, safety, and care.Clinical Ultrasound Program in the ER
Our emergency department has 4 portable ultrasound machines. This bedside tool enhances the diagnostic abilities of the provider, and provides more rapid patient care. Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is verified as a Level 1 Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, and has received this designation by New York State. The Level 1 status is the highest level of distinction. It reflects our trauma center’s dedication to providing exceptional care for our injured patients and our numerous resources in ensuring this commitment.Acute Heart Attack Care
Our new Cardiovascular Interventional Suite offers the latest and most-advanced technologies in managing all types of acute heart attacks and cardiogenic shock. Our team of interventional cardiologists, cardiac nurse practitioners (NPs), and cardiac nurses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide timely, expedient care. We are 1 of only 4 hospitals in Queens to have such capability. Additionally, we have catheter-directed therapy for severe cases of pulmonary embolism. We received the Silver Performance Achievement Award by the American College of Cardiology, and the Gold Plus Achievement Award in Heart Failure (the highest level award possible) by the American Heart Association, in recognition of our high standard of care for heart attack patients.Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center
As a Designated Primary Stroke Center, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center has a team of experts, including neurologists, stroke coordinators, emergency physicians, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, and neurointerventionalists whom are all dedicated to providing the latest treatment for stroke including thrombolytic therapy and mechanical thrombectomy. We are one of only three hospitals in Queens to offer this exceptional capability; 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are proud to be awarded the Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award and Target Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association.
