Your Birthing Experience

When you arrive to Jamaica Hospital, you will be directed to our Triage, where we will assess your labor symptoms. If you are in labor, we will move you to your own private labor room.

We are passionate about family centered care and allow two guests and an additional coach to be by your bedside. Young siblings are welcome to stay for the delivery, although some children opt to wait outside until their sibling arrives. In that case, we ask an adult be present to supervise the child.

For normal deliveries, you will remain in your private labor room with your support team.  For C-sections or other deliveries that require specialized care, we have a state-of-the-art operating room located on the unit.

Obstetric Anesthesia

Modern obstetric anesthesia care focuses on helping both mother and baby safely through the childbirth process. At Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, our team of OB Anesthesiologists is available 24/7 and is dedicated to making this process as pain-free as is safely possible.

Post-Partum Care

After you have given birth, we continue to provide the quality care needed for your newborn’s healthy beginning.   Your support team which includes certified lactation consultants and other health care professionals are available to help you recover and care for your baby. Jamaica Hospital is a designated Baby –Friendly® Hospital and we encourage breastfeeding/chestfeeding because of the many health benefits it provides your baby.

Skin-to- Skin

Kangaroo Care or skin-to-skin is holding your baby against your bare chest to promote bonding and provide extra warmth. Mothers will be assisted by the Labor and Delivery staff to hold their baby skin to skin as soon as possible after the delivery, provided both mother and baby are stable. Skin-to-skin benefits include better breastfeeding/chestfeeding success, calmer babies, better blood sugar levels and improved respiratory rates.

Breastfeeding/Chestfeeding Support

We have an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant and specially trained registered nurses available for breastfeeding/chestfeeding support throughout your entire stay. We also offer ongoing individual instruction on bathing, feeding, developmental needs of the newborn and follow-up care for yourself and infant.
