Stroke Care

Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke, and every 3 minutes, someone dies, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is the leading cause of death for Americans. The risk of having a stroke varies with race and ethnicity, with the risk of having a stroke being nearly twice as high for non-Hispanic black adults as for white adults. In addition, black adults have the highest rate of death from stroke.
The chances of survival are greater when emergency treatment begins quickly. To address this issue, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center has taken strides to provide the highest quality treatment to stroke victims in our community. We have been designated as the first and only Comprehensive Stroke Center (the highest designation of stroke care) in Queens by the Joint Commission. This means that we offer the best available treatments for acute stroke patients to provide them with the best chances of recovery.
