The Mother Baby Unit at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center provides a supportive, family centered care environment to make the birth of your baby a memorable experience.
Our dedicated staff is fully committed to providing quality care and meeting all your needs as well as those of the newest member of your family. We go the extra mile to ensure your stay is comfortable.
Our 35-bed secured maternity unit provides you with a safe, comfortable environment to nurture your baby. Patient rooms are equipped with private bathrooms, flat screen televisions, recliners and complimentary telephone service.
Rooming In
Jamaica Hospital understands the importance of getting to know your infant. The bond between you and your baby is strengthened when 24 hour contact is practiced. This means that mother and bay are not separated after delivery. building a bond between you and your baby, which is why we practice 24-hour rooming. Mommy and baby are not separated after delivery. Research has shown that mother mother and baby receive better quality sleep when they room in together. While staying in the same room, you will learn to care for your new baby, learn their breastfeeding/chestfeeding cues and other needs. Our staff will come to you for baby’s checkups and anything else you may need. Your significant other or support person is encouraged to spend the night as permitted to assist with caring for your baby. Recliners are available.
We encourage skin-to-skin contact to help you bond with your baby. For breastfeeding/chestfeeding moms, this will help your baby to latch on for milk.
For infants requiring closer observation, the Newborn Observation Room is available with a team of experts on hand.
Mother Baby Unit Visiting Hours
The visiting hours on the Mother-Baby Unit, located on 2 North are 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
(Overnight stay for fathers/significant others/support person is limited to 1 person)
Quiet Time
We believe a quiet environment is a healing environment. From 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, the lights are dimmed, and noise is kept to a low level. This allows new moms to rest and have privacy with their newborn.
During quiet time, visitors are still allowed but are asked to keep voices low and maintain noise level at a minimum.
Birth Certificates
After you have delivered your baby, our birth registrar will come present you with birth certificate papers to be handed in before your day of discharge. The birth certificate and social security card will be mailed to you in 2-8 weeks. More information can be found on the official New York State website.
Our Birth Registration Office, located in the Admitting Department on the ground floor of the hospital, can be reached at 718-206-8948 during the following hours:
Monday – Saturday (including holidays) 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Gift Upon Discharge
Every mother receives an exclusive gift upon discharge. It’s our special way of saying thank you for choosing Jamaica Hospital.
Day of Discharge – Car Seat
Safety is very important to us. An infant leaving the hospital in a vehicle must be in a car seat. Feel free to pull your vehicle to the main entrance of the hospital. Our staff is available to help you and your baby during day of discharge.
