Welcome to Jamaica hospital's

Clinical Training Experience

The fellowship curriculum provides comprehensive, hands-on experience across the full spectrum of addiction medicine. Fellows gain expertise in managing substance use disorders, co-occurring psychiatric illnesses, and complex medical conditions through a combination of inpatient, outpatient, consultative, and community-based experiences.

Inpatient Addiction Medicine

Fellows rotate through the Chemical Dependency Unit (CDU), where they develop expertise in:

  • Medical detoxification
  • Withdrawal management
  • Acute stabilization
  • Co-occurring psychiatric disorders
  • Medically complex substance use disorders

This rotation provides broad exposure to acute addiction treatment and prepares fellows to manage complicated presentations commonly encountered in clinical practice.

Outpatient Addiction Medicine

Fellows participate in longitudinal continuity clinics through the Reflections Clinic, where they develop ongoing therapeutic relationships with patients while providing evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders. Clinical experiences include:

  • Buprenorphine treatment
  • Extended-release Naltrexone (Vivitrol)
  • Oral Naltrexone
  • Medication management
  • Relapse prevention strategies
  • Recovery-oriented care
  • Integrated psychiatric treatment

The continuity clinic experience allows fellows to follow patients across multiple stages of recovery and develop expertise in long-term addiction treatment.

Addiction Medicine Consultation Service

Fellows provide addiction medicine consultations at both Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and Flushing Hospital Medical Center. Consultation experiences include:

  • Medical and surgical inpatient consultations
  • Hospital-based initiation of addiction treatment
  • Management of withdrawal syndromes
  • Integration of addiction care into general medical practice
  • Care coordination and discharge planning
  • Linkage to outpatient treatment programs

This experience prepares fellows to function effectively in academic and hospital-based addiction medicine settings.

Specialized Rotations

Additional clinical experiences include:

  • Pain Management
  • Emergency Department-Based Addiction Care
  • Mobile Crisis Services
  • Methadone Maintenance Treatment Programs
  • Community-Based Substance Use Treatment Services

These rotations provide exposure to unique patient populations and specialized treatment environments while allowing fellows to develop expertise in integrated and systems-based addiction care.
