PGY-1 Year

Residents will spend four months on the Inpatient Psychiatry Services at Jamaica Hospital and one month in the Psychiatric Emergency Room. They will spend one month on the Chemical Dependency Unit at Flushing Hospital to learn how to detox patients and treat their addictions. During the first year, residents also rotate for four months on the Family Medicine and Internal Medicine Services at Jamaica Hospital. Two months of Neurology is also done at Jamaica Hospital

PGY-2 Year

During this year, residents will spend five months on the Inpatient Psychiatric Service. Here they will move to a more advanced level of evaluating and treating patients requiring inpatient psychiatric care.

Residents will spend one month in Forensic Psychiatry with the Queens Court System.

One month will be in the Psychiatric Emergency Department. Residents will develop the ability to assess, begin treatment, and make disposition decisions for patients in crisis.

Geriatric Psychiatry is taught during the one-month rotation at the Jamaica Nursing and Rehabilitation center, on site.

Residents will spend a one-month rotation in Community Psychiatry by joining the Mobile Crisis Team, evaluating patients where they live.

Two months are on the Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Service at Jamaica Hospital. Here, residents will learn how to evaluate and treat patients on medical and surgical services.

PGY-3 Year

The third year focuses on outpatient treatment for both adults and children. Residents will develop skills in outpatient psychopharmacology. They will improve their understanding of treatment of patients using psychodynamic psychotherapy, as well as supportive psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, child therapy, and motivational interviewing. Clinical work is done in the outpatient Mental Health Clinic of Jamaica Hospital.

PGY-4 Year

During the fourth year, residents rotate in some of the divisions they had worked on previously, now with a deeper understanding of problems their patients face. Outpatient treatment also continues. Residents have time for administrative work and electives.

Residents will work Administrative Psychiatry, both inpatient and outpatient.

They rotate on the Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Service and on Comprehensive Emergency Psychiatric Service at Jamaica Hospital.

Electives are available within our Network, including such rotations as: medical student teaching, pain & palliative care, neurology, and enhanced research, among others.

Electives are also available in Psycho-oncology through our collaboration with Memorial Sloan Kettering. Residents may attend classes and conferences virtually or in-person. They have the opportunities to work in Psycho-oncology, both in the Jamaica and Manhattan locations.
