As an American College of Surgeons(ACS) and NYS Designated Level 1 Trauma Center facility in New York City, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center provides the highest level of care to trauma patients. Our Trauma Division is a 24 hour, 7 day a week operation that is always ready and equipped for the most critical patients.

With one of the largest voluntary ambulance services in the City’s 911 system, as well as our proximity to JFK International Airport and several major highways, our Trauma Division is one of the busiest New York trauma centers. Over 1,500 trauma activations are seen each year. Seventy percent of the injuries treated at our Level 1 Trauma Center New York City facility are the result of a motor vehicle accident, a fall, an assault, or a pedestrian being struck. In recent years, a rising incidence of penetrating injuries has also been seen.

We have experts in trauma, emergency medicine, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, oral and maxillofacial, anesthesiology, radiology, intensive care and rehabilitation medicine who provide care for the trauma patient through the early and later stages. Other often-needed specialties such as vascular surgery, urology, plastic surgery, and hand surgery are also readily available.

Continuum of care means that we provide optimal care for the person’s injury and also psychosocial support for the patient and their family through all phases of care from treatment at our New York City Level 1 Trauma Center to recovery and the transition back into a healthy, active life at home.
Jamaica Hospital has several other services and departments that work in concert with the surgeons to ensure that the patient’s care is individualized, yet comprehensive, and not isolated. We also have an inpatient rehabilitation unit where the patient may continue to regain functional independence under the care of qualified psychiatrists, physical and occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, psychologists, etc.
Trauma Surgery
Jamaica Hospital’s Division of Trauma Surgery at our Level 1 Trauma Center New York City facility is comprised of a group of highly experienced trauma surgeons who were trained at specialized trauma centers across the country, including the Maryland Medical Center, R. Adams Crowley Shock Trauma and Weill Cornell Medical College.
These surgeons work closely with specialists in vascular, neurological, orthopedic, plastic, pediatric, critical care, and otorhinolaryngologic (ENT), and ophthalmologic surgery, as well as experts in rehabilitation, nutrition, and social work, to provide patients with a full spectrum of comprehensive medical care.
Comprehensive Trauma Care
Patients brought in by emergency medical services will receive direct care from the trauma team, from the time they arrive at the hospital until their discharge.
