Trauma Center
Level 1 Trauma Center | New York City
If you are seriously injured, being treated at a Level 1 Trauma Center increases your chances of survival by around 20 to 25 percent. As an American College of Surgeons (ACS) verified and NYS-designated Level 1 Trauma Center, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center has proven it is able to provide the highest level of care to trauma patients. Our Trauma Center is a 24-hour, 7 day a week operation that is always ready and equipped to evaluate and care for the most critically injured patients. These injuries are a result of falls, assaults, motor vehicle and motorcycle crashes, and pedestrians being struck.
Jamaica Hospital’s Division of Trauma Surgery at our Level 1 Trauma Center is comprised of a group of highly experienced trauma surgeons who were trained at specialized trauma centers across the country, including University Hospital in Newark, NJ; University of Maryland Medical Center’s R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, MD; and Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ.
Many trauma patients are seen as Trauma Activation. In fact, the Trauma Center at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center sees approximately 2000 trauma activations annually. They are initially seen and evaluated by the Trauma Team, comprised of Trauma Surgeons, Emergency Medicine Physicians, trauma nurses, and radiological technicians. If necessary, additional specialty services, such as Anesthesia, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Respiratory Therapists, and others, are called to the patient’s bedside for immediate evaluation and intervention. Additional surgical subspecialties, such as Vascular, Ophthalmology, Urology, Plastics, Otolaryngology, Hand Surgery, and others, are readily available if needed. In addition to those providing immediate care to trauma patients, we have experts in Intensive Care, Geriatric Medicine, and Rehabilitation Medicine, providing care for the trauma patient through the early and later stages.
