Jamaica Hospital Rehabilitation
Speech Language Pathologists provide evaluation and treatment for individuals with congenital and acquired communication disorders such as motor speech impairments/Aphasia (language disorder with difficulty finding words/forming words or comprehending the spoken word)/Voice, fluency disorders, and cognitive-linguistic impairments (deficits in attention/memory/problem-solving). Most commonly, these impairments are acquired as a result of brain injury, medical condition (stroke/Parkinson’s disease), or other disability. Speech Pathologists will strive to help individuals develop functional communication through individualized therapy targeting their specific needs.
SLPs also evaluate and treat individuals with acquired or congenital dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) who may not be able to eat/drink safely. Evaluations may include: clinical bedside or office swallow evaluations or Instrumental swallow evaluations, At JHMC, the SLPs conduct Modified barium swallow studies (MBS) and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Swallow Evaluations (FEES) both of which are objective swallow evaluations that are dynamic and allow for direct visualization of the anatomy during intake of food/liquid. These evaluations lead to the most appropriate/safest diet to be recommended based on each individual’s needs. Once the SLP has evaluated the swallow, they can conduct direct swallowing therapy to strengthen oral and pharyngeal muscles needed for safe and efficient oral intake. Most commonly, dysphagia is a result of acquired medical/neurological conditions such as Stroke/traumatic brain injury/head and neck cancer, or other Neurological conditions (Parkinson’s disease/Multiple Sclerosis/ALS, etc).
