Physiatry

Physiatry is a medical specialty for diagnosing, treating, and preventing injuries and disabilities. A physiatrist is a doctor who takes a holistic approach that examines every element of a patient’s life, including their home, work, and other daily activities, to determine how these injuries affect (and are affected by) the patient’s condition. Physiatry also involves a combined approach of medication and non- or minimally invasive procedures to relieve pain and restore physical functionality as much as possible.
Physiatrists treat various injuries and medical conditions affecting people of all ages. In some cases, they may coordinate with other physicians, such as neurologists, to provide you with more comprehensive, effective treatment. They will coordinate the care with other physicians and clinicians such as physical therapists (PT), occupational therapists (OT), and speech-language pathologists (SLP).

Some conditions frequently treated by physiatrists include:
  • Back and neck pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Arthritis
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Herniated discs Fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions
A physiatrist may be the right medical specialist to visit if you are experiencing chronic pain, discomfort, or disability due to an injury, condition, or illness. Quite often, a physiatrist's services are helpful if you:
  • Are recovering from surgery
  • Are at high risk of medical complications from surgery
  • Have not yet explored non-surgical treatments for your condition
