An infant is defined as a baby between birth and one year of age. The\nAmerican Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that infants see the dentist\nfor their first dental exam within six months of getting their first tooth or\nby their first birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Deborah Pasquale, Chairperson of the Department of Dentistry\nat Jamaica Hospital Medical Center makes the following suggestions on how to prepare\nfor the first dental exam:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make\nsure the infant is well rested the night prior<\/li><li>Schedule\na morning appointment when the infant is most likely to be well rested and\nalert<\/li><li>Make\nthe visit to the dental specialist a positive experience<\/li><li>Give\nthe dentist the infant\u2019s medical history<\/li><li>Bring\nthe infant\u2019s favorite toy or blanket to make them feel comfortable<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>During\nthe exam, the dentist will evaluate the infant for proper gum and tooth development.\nIf necessary, the dentist will gently clean the gums and any teeth that are\npresent. Flouride treatment may also be recommended. To help protect the infant\u2019s\nteeth at home the dentist will instruct parents on how to properly clean teeth\nand gums, as well as make suggestions on proper nutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jamaica Hospital\u2019s pediatric dental center is ultra\nmodern and provides comprehensive dental services for children in a welcoming\nenvironment.
