{"id":8776,"date":"2021-06-25T01:20:17","date_gmt":"2021-06-25T01:20:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/?p=8776"},"modified":"2021-06-25T01:20:19","modified_gmt":"2021-06-25T01:20:19","slug":"jamaica-hospital-welcomes-dr-ugochi-akoma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/jamaica-hospital-welcomes-dr-ugochi-akoma\/","title":{"rendered":"Jamaica Hospital Welcomes Dr. Ugochi Akoma"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Jamaica\nHospital Medical Center would like to introduce our community to Dr. Ugochi\nAkoma, our new Obstetric Gynecologist, specializing in Maternal Fetal Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Akoma-Professional-Picture-1-680x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8777\" width=\"253\" height=\"386\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Akoma, who grew\nup in the South Bronx, earned her Bachelor and Doctor of Medicine degrees at\nBrown University. She returned to her Bronx roots to complete her residency at\nthe Montefiore, Albert Einstein College of Medicine.&nbsp; After completing her residency training, Dr.\nAkoma demonstrated her commitment to her caring for her community by dedicating\nfive years of clinical service to treat thousands of underserved pregnant women\nin the Bronx.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During that time, Dr. Akoma encountered\nmany high-risk patients facing challenges such as diabetes, high blood\npressure, and infections in pregnancy. These experiences further inspired her\ngoal to complete a fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at Wake Forest\nUniversity School of Medicine. There she acquired the necessary tools to\nprovide her patients with an expertise in diagnosing and managing high risk\npregnancy conditions. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Akoma joined\nJamaica Hospital earlier this year and her current title is Director of\nPerinatal Diagnostic Centers- Obstetric Ultrasound, and Director of Quality\nImprovement in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In addition to her training\nin the medical and surgical management of high-risk pregnancies, Dr. Akoma also\nspecializes in the management of a broad range of high-risk complex medical\nconditions such as diabetes, hypertension, preeclampsia, multifetal pregnancy,\ncervical insufficiency, preterm birth, and placental previa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Dr Akoma is a first generation American who understands\nthe health disparities many women in our community face due to reduced access\nto safe housing, healthy foods, education, and quality health care.
