Masks help to trap saliva or other\ntypes of water droplets from escaping into the air and transmitting COVID. They\ncan also trap moisture and create an environment for bacteria to thrive.\nAdditionally, the fabrics used to make certain masks can irritate sensitive\nskin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of these elements may\ncontribute to the development of the following conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Acne <\/strong>\u2013 Pimples, whiteheads or blackheads caused by\npores becoming clogged with oil, dead skin, and dirt.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rosacea<\/strong> \u2013 If you already have rosacea, wearing a mask\ncan irritate your skin and cause a flare-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Contact\ndermatitis<\/strong> \u2013 The material used to make\nthe mask may cause an allergic reaction, especially if you have sensitive skin.\nThe reaction may come in the form of a red rash and blisters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Folliculitis<\/strong> \u2013 Wearing a mask for long periods of time can\ncause your hair follicles to become infected and cause bumps on your skin.&nbsp; These bumps can be itchy and painful and appear\nsimilar to acne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some ways to prevent these\ntypes of conditions are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wash your face regularly.<\/li><li>Use a gentle cleanser.<\/li><li>Apply cortisone\ncream and moisturizer to your face and neck.<\/li><li>Avoid wearing\nmakeup while you are wearing your mask.<\/li><li>Frequently\nchanging disposable masks<\/li><li>Washing your\nreusable mask with hypoallergenic soaps.<\/li><li>Use topical\nantibiotic cream to prevent a breakout before wearing your mask.<\/li><li>Always wash your\nhands before removing your mask.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Academy of\nDermatology Association recommends removing your mask for 15 minutes every 4\nhours to give your skin a breather.&nbsp;\nAdditionally, try removing your face mask in instances when you are in a\nsituation where physical distancing is an option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that wearing a\nmask is extremely effective in slowing the spread of the COVID-19 virus and\nchoosing the right type of mask can alleviate some skin irritations you may be\nexperiencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your skin irritation persists, you may want to seek the advice of a dermatologist at <a href=\"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/\">Jamaica Hospital Medical Center\u2019s <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/clinical-services\/ambulatory-care\/\">Ambulatory Care Center<\/a>.\u00a0 Please call <a href=\"http:\/\/718-206-7001\">718-206-7001 <\/a>for an appointment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"disclaimer\">All content of this newsletter is intended for general information purposes only and is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
