{"id":8622,"date":"2021-04-22T18:39:41","date_gmt":"2021-04-22T18:39:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/?p=8622"},"modified":"2021-04-22T18:39:43","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T18:39:43","slug":"covid-19-and-the-potential-for-a-stroke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/covid-19-and-the-potential-for-a-stroke\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 and the Potential for a Stroke"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/GettyImages-1272381741-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8624\" width=\"348\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/GettyImages-1272381741-1.jpg 724w, https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/GettyImages-1272381741-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/GettyImages-1272381741-1-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 348px) 100vw, 348px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As more details\nare being learned about COVID-19, &nbsp;evidence suggests that having the virus\nmay increase the risk of stroke. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A stroke may\noccur in patients who have contracted COVID for several reasons. &nbsp;Here are\na few believed to be contributing factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The pre-existence of  underlying cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension or heart disease<\/li><li>The development of infections and inflammation caused by COVID that can lead to stroke<\/li><li>The formation of blood clots which can lead to stroke<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have\nshown that some COVID positive individuals are more at risk than others for\nhaving a stroke.&nbsp; It has been found that males, 65 years of age or older,\nare more likely than females to have an ischemic stroke after contracting the\nvirus and African Americans are at higher risk than Caucasians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research also\nindicates that people who have a stroke and COVID spend about twice as long in\nthe hospital as patients who do not have COVID (22 days versus 10 days).&nbsp;\nPatients with COVID who have a stroke are also twice as likely to die than\nnon-COVID stroke patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are at\nrisk of having a stroke or other cardiovascular issues you should visit your\ndoctor for regular checkups to prevent complications.&nbsp; It is also\nimportant to take preventative measures to avoid the COVID-19 virus.
