This year the slogan is \u201cLiving Well with Kidney Disease\u201d because\nthe aim is to educate people who are affected to manage it successfully. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The kidneys are two, fist-sized\norgans in your lower back. They maintain overall health by serving following\nfunctions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Filtering waste out of 200 liters of blood each day<\/li><li>Regulating of the body\u2019s salt, potassium and acid content<\/li><li>Removing toxins from the body.<\/li><li>Balancing the body\u2019s fluids<\/li><li>Releasing hormones that regulate blood pressure<\/li><li>Producing an active form of vitamin D that promotes strong,\nhealthy bones<\/li><li>Controlling the production of red blood cells<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the U.S. Centers for\nDisease and Control, some quick facts on Kidney Disease are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Kidney disease is the 9<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;leading cause of death in the country.<\/li><li>More than 26 million Americans have kidney disease, and most\ndon\u2019t know it.<\/li><li>There are over 95,000 people waiting for kidney transplants.<\/li><li>Currently, more than 590,000 people have kidney failure in the\nU.S. today.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Often times, kidney failure can\nbe prevented or delayed through early detection and proper treatment of\nunderlying disease such as diabetes and high blood pressure which can slow\nadditional damage to the kidneys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are 18 years or older with\ndiabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease or a family history of\nkidney disease, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor and ask\nthat you be screened for kidney disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you would like to make an\nappointment to have your Kidney\u2019s checked, you can schedule an appointment at Jamaica\nHospital Medical Center by calling 718-206-7001&nbsp;for an appointment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"disclaimer\">All content of this newsletter is intended for general information purposes only and is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
