The ACIP is a group\nof medical and public health experts that develop recommendations on how to use\nvaccines to control diseases in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Factors that the ACIP consider in their recommendations of\nvaccines include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Safety and effectiveness <\/li><li>Severity of the disease<\/li><li>The number of people who get the disease if\nthere is no vaccine<\/li><li>How effective is the vaccine for different age\ngroups<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The recent news about the availability of a COVID-19 &nbsp;vaccine has led to questions from many members\nof our community. Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is sharing the following\ninformation from the Centers for Disease Control &nbsp;and Prevention (CDC) in an attempt to answer\nthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some commonly asked questions that people are asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who will receive the vaccine first?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; At the\npresent time, the first people to receive the vaccine will be frontline\nhealthcare workers<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and elderly patients who\nare in extended care facilities such as nursing homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is the vaccine safe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vaccines that are being\ndistributed have undergone rigorous testing and have met the safety standards\nset forth by the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are there any side effects of this vaccine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The known side effects of the\nvaccines currently being distributed include soreness in the arm in which the\nvaccine was administered and some people have developed low grade fevers. Both\nof these only lasted less than 48 hours. There may be other side effects that\nwe aren\u2019t aware of yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will the vaccine prevent me from getting COVID-19 ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This vaccine, like all other\nvaccines, will lessen the chances of getting the virus but is not 100 percent\nguaranteed to be effective for everyone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How long will the vaccine be effective for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until more time has passed and more\npeople have been vaccinated, the CDC is not sure how long the vaccine will be\neffective for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do I need to wear a mask when I receive the vaccine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. Receiving the vaccine does not\nguarantee that you will not get the virus. Anytime you are outside of your\nimmediate household and in contact with others, you should wear a mask that\ncovers your nose and mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will I still have to follow safety protocols even though I\nhave received the vaccine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. The vaccine is only one\ncomponent of the safety measures that will still have to be followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How many times will I have to be vaccinated?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the present time, it will be necessary\nto receive two doses of the vaccine and you will be given a date when you\nreceive the first dose and when to come back for the second one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I already had the virus, should I still get the vaccine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the present time the CDC feels there\nisn\u2019t enough information available to answer this question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What should I do if I have a reaction to the vaccine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should contact your health care\nprovider immediately as well as to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System\n(VAERS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first doses were delivered around the United States on Monday December 14<sup>th<\/sup>. Once mass distribution begins the answers to the frequently asked questions will be answered more accurately.
