{"id":7689,"date":"2020-09-28T21:11:40","date_gmt":"2020-09-28T21:11:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/?p=7689"},"modified":"2020-09-28T21:14:39","modified_gmt":"2020-09-28T21:14:39","slug":"ruptured-eardrum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/ruptured-eardrum\/","title":{"rendered":"Ruptured Eardrum"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/ears-95305424-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7691\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The tympanic membrane or eardrum is a very important part of\nour ear.&nbsp; This thin layer of tissue which\ndivides the outer ear canal and middle ear helps to transmit sound vibrations.\nIt also helps to protect the middle ear from foreign objects such as water or\nbacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A rupture or tear of the eardrum can lead to serious\ncomplications such as hearing loss or infections of the middle ear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a number of things that can cause our eardrums to\nrupture. They include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ear infections -When the middle ear is infected,\nthis can result in fluid accumulating behind the eardrum.&nbsp; Pressure from this buildup can cause the\ntympanic membrane to break.<\/li><li>Barotrauma- This occurs when there is a change\nin pressure. If the pressure inside the ear is drastically different from that\noutside the ear, this can lead to perforation. An example of this is when an\nairplane changes altitude causing air pressure in the cabin to rise or fall.<\/li><li>Direct trauma to the ear or side of the head-\nThese injuries can be sustained from an ear slap or falling on the ear.<\/li><li>Acoustic trauma \u2013 A sudden, loud noise or blast\nsuch as an explosion can produce sound waves that are powerful enough to cause injury.<\/li><li>Foreign objects- Inserting objects such as a cotton\nswab or hairpin into the ear canal can puncture the eardrum.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Pain is the most common symptom of an eardrum rupture;\nhowever, you may also experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ringing or buzzing in the ear<\/li><li>Dizziness or vertigo<\/li><li>Drainage of pus or fluid from the ear <\/li><li>Hearing loss<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important that you see a doctor if any of these symptoms occur.\u00a0\u00a0 An Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) doctor can determine if you have a ruptured eardrum by using an otoscope to conduct an inspection.\u00a0 Additional testing can include, audiology exams, a tuning fork evaluation or tympanometry which measures the response of the eardrum to slight changes in air pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Jamaica Hospital ENT specialist Dr. Sandra Ho, a\nruptured eardrum can usually heal on its own. Depending on the reason for the\nperforation, painkillers and\/or antibiotics may help during the healing\nprocess. However, if it does not heal in a few weeks, your ENT may recommend an\neardrum patch. This procedure involves a doctor placing a medicated paper patch\nover the hole.&nbsp; In some cases, surgery\nmay be required to repair the perforated eardrum.
