This test is most commonly performed to evaluate a patient for\nosteoporosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osteoporosis is a disease that\ncauses bones to lose density and become easy to break or fracture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people are more at risk for\ndeveloping osteoporosis than others. Risk factors include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Age \u2013 Older people tend to have a greater incidence of\nosteoporosis<\/li><li>Race \u2013 Caucasians and Asians are\ntypically more prone to bone density issues<\/li><li>Gender \u2013 Women experience bone\nloss more frequently than men<\/li><li>Dietary factors \u2013 People who have\na low intake of calcium are at greater risk<\/li><li>Medications \u2013 People with a long\nterm use of injectable steroids have bone loss issues<\/li><li>Smoking \u2013 People who smoke tend to\nlose bone mass at a faster rate than non-smokers<\/li><li>Family history \u2013 There is a\ncorrelation of osteoporosis and hereditary factors<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of the disease are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Loss of height over a period of time<\/li><li>Back pain<\/li><li>Bones that break more easily than\nexpected<\/li><li>A stooped posture<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who are presenting\nsymptoms or have a higher chance of developing osteoporosis, a doctor may\nrecommend testing to assess the density of their bones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bone density screenings are\nnon-invasive, painless, and use low amounts of x-rays. The results of the test\nwill indicate whether or not you need to take medication that will help to\nmaintain your bone density or make changes in your lifestyle and diet to\nprevent bone loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you would like to schedule a\nbone density screening at Flushing Hospital Medical Center, ask your physician\nfor a referral to have it performed.
