{"id":7132,"date":"2019-11-27T17:58:37","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T17:58:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/?p=7132"},"modified":"2024-05-09T03:33:58","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T03:33:58","slug":"carpel-tunnel-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/carpel-tunnel-syndrome\/","title":{"rendered":"Carpal Tunnel Syndrome"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is characterized by numbness,\ntingling and weakness in the hand caused by pressure exerted on a major nerve\nand tendons in the wrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway on the palm side of\nthe wrist through which passes the median nerve and these tendons.&nbsp; It usually starts, gradually, with numbness\nin the thumb, index and middle fingers that, at first, may appear to come and\ngo and ten as it progressively worsens, remains constant.&nbsp; It generally affects women more frequently\nthan men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Tingling or numbness of the thumb, index finger\nand middle fingers<\/li><li>Weakness of the hand with difficulty holding on\nto objects<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Compression of the median nerve can be caused by a few\ndifferent factors.&nbsp; Some people have\nnaturally occurring smaller carpal tunnels which can lead to increased likelihood\nof damage.&nbsp; Any damage to treat area of\nthe wrist can cause a problem.&nbsp; A\nprevious wrist fracture or anything that may cause swelling in that area can\nlead to the problem developing.&nbsp; In\naddition, there are certain health related issues such as diabetes,\nhypothyroidism and arthritis which can be associated with this condition.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Temporary relief from the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome\ncan be addressed by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Taking quick breaks from repetitive activities\nof the hand<\/li><li>Rotate your wrists and stretch your palms and\nfingers<\/li><li>Avoid sleeping on your hands and wrists<\/li><li>Ultrasound therapy which makes the area of the\nwrist warm and more flexible<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome really depends on what\nthe cause is and how severe it has become.&nbsp;\nIf symptoms appear, never wait too long before seeking treatment options\nas this can lead to permanent damage.&nbsp;\nSome simple remedies include stopping any activity that may be\ncompressing the nerve, putting ice on the wrist for 10-15 minutes once or twice\nan hour, taking anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling, and wearing a\nnight splint to take the pressure off of the nerve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some cases can be helped with injections of corticosteroids.&nbsp; When the condition is really severe, surgical intervention may be required.&nbsp; If you are experiencing the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome and would like to be treated by an  at , please call  to schedule an appointment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"disclaimer\">All content of this newsletter is intended for general information purposes only and is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
