{"id":6887,"date":"2019-09-24T19:50:14","date_gmt":"2019-09-24T19:50:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/?p=6887"},"modified":"2024-05-09T03:33:58","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T03:33:58","slug":"claustrophobia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/claustrophobia\/","title":{"rendered":"Claustrophobia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Categorized as a \u201cphobia\u201d, claustrophobia is diagnosed when the patient exhibits persistent (usually 6 months or longer) unreasonable or excessive fear due to the presence or anticipation of a specific situation.\u00a0 That fear will often times cause an anxiety response that may lead to a panic attack.<\/p>\n<p>People with claustrophobia will go to great lengths to avoid what triggers their anxiety, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being in a small room without windows<\/li>\n<li>Riding in an airplane, small motor vehicle or subway car<\/li>\n<li>Being in a packed elevator<\/li>\n<li>Undergoing medical testing such as a MRI or CT scan<\/li>\n<li>Attending large gatherings like a concert or party<\/li>\n<li>Standing in a closet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While in the throes of an episode, the person with claustrophobia may experience one or more of these symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sweating and chills<\/li>\n<li>Dry mouth<\/li>\n<li>Headache and numbness<\/li>\n<li>Tightness in the chest, and chest pain<\/li>\n<li>Nausea<\/li>\n<li>Disorientation and confusion<\/li>\n<li>Lightheadedness, fainting, and dizziness<\/li>\n<li>High blood pressure and an accelerated heart rate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In severe cases, claustrophobia may cause reactions that can interfere with the person\u2019s everyday life, professional life and relationships.<\/p>\n<p>If you are experiencing the signs and symptoms of claustrophobia and would like to speak with a professional at , please call  to schedule an appointment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"disclaimer\">All content of this newsletter is intended for general information purposes only and is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
