One\u2019s loss of smell can be partial or reduced (hyposmia) or complete (anosmia).\u00a0 In both cases, a loss of smell can be temporary or permanent.<\/p>\n<p>Several conditions can lead to hyposmia; they include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Colds<\/li>\n<li>Nasal allergies<\/li>\n<li>Flu<\/li>\n<li>Hay fever<\/li>\n<li>Sinus infection<\/li>\n<li>Deviated septum<\/li>\n<li>Hormonal imbalances<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Anosmia can develop as a result of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Head trauma<\/li>\n<li>Upper respiratory viral infections<\/li>\n<li>Nasal\/ sinus diseases<\/li>\n<li>Nasal polyps<\/li>\n<li>Bone deformities of the nose<\/li>\n<li>Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have lost or have had a decline in your ability to smell, you should see a doctor immediately.\u00a0\u00a0 Your doctor can perform a physical examination, review your medical history and request a series of tests to determine possible causes.
