{"id":6496,"date":"2019-05-09T16:58:30","date_gmt":"2019-05-09T16:58:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/?p=6496"},"modified":"2024-05-09T03:33:49","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T03:33:49","slug":"a-can-stroke-affect-young-people-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/a-can-stroke-affect-young-people-too\/","title":{"rendered":"A Can Stroke Affect Young People Too"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stroke is usually thought of as something that happens to older people but an estimated 10% of stroke victims are under 45.<\/p>\n<p>One study revealed that when a stroke occurs in younger individuals, the mortality rate is seven times higher than the general population. If a younger person has more than one stroke, their mortality rate increases to 17 times higher than the general population.<\/p>\n<p>Risk factors include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Obesity<\/li>\n<li>Diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Elevated cholesterol<\/li>\n<li>Intravenous drug addiction<\/li>\n<li>High blood pressure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unfortunately, because strokes are less common in younger people, diagnosis and treatment is delayed. Diagnosing a stroke is usually done with the aid of an MRI. Younger people who are diagnosed quickly tend to do well when treated early with medication that can break up a blood clot. It is important that this medication be administered within the first 4 \u00bd hours.<\/p>\n<p>To identify a stroke it is important to remember the <strong>FAST<\/strong> acronym which stands for the signs and symptoms of a stroke<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>F<\/u><\/strong>acial drooping<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A<\/u><\/strong>bility to raise arms is limited or absent<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>S<\/u><\/strong>lurred speech<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>T<\/u><\/strong>ime \u2013 how much time it takes to summon help<\/p>\n<p>There are a few factors that can help prevent a stroke.
