{"id":5888,"date":"2018-10-02T18:26:41","date_gmt":"2018-10-02T18:26:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/?p=5888"},"modified":"2018-10-02T18:26:41","modified_gmt":"2018-10-02T18:26:41","slug":"what-pregnant-women-should-know-about-the-whooping-cough-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/what-pregnant-women-should-know-about-the-whooping-cough-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"What Pregnant Women Should Know About the Whooping Cough Vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/pregnant-woman-vaccination-617390670.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5889\" src=\"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/pregnant-woman-vaccination-617390670.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a>Whooping cough or pertussis is a highly contagious bacterial infection that affects the respiratory system.\u00a0 \u00a0It is spread person-to-person by coughing, sneezing, or sharing the same breathing space as someone who is infected.<\/p>\n<p>Complications of pertussis can lead to serious illnesses or death in babies. \u00a0Infants under the age of one are at the greatest risk because their immune systems are not fully developed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), \u201cAbout half of babies younger than 1 year who get the disease need care in the hospital.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Complications of whooping cough may vary by individual and can result in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pneumonia<\/li>\n<li>Seizures<\/li>\n<li>Brain damage<\/li>\n<li>Apnea (slowed or stopped breathing)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The best way to protect babies from whooping cough is for pregnant women to get the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTaP) shot.\u00a0 \u00a0The CDC recommends that, \u201cwomen get the whooping cough vaccine between 27 and 36 weeks of each pregnancy.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 By receiving the vaccine during this time, mothers can pass on protective antibodies to their babies before birth.\u00a0\u00a0 This will offer protection to babies during their first few months of life before they are able to get vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>If safety is a concern, the CDC advises that getting the vaccine is very safe for mothers and babies. \u00a0Severe side effects are extremely rare.
