{"id":5052,"date":"2020-01-24T15:52:00","date_gmt":"2020-01-24T15:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/?p=5052"},"modified":"2022-01-12T19:01:57","modified_gmt":"2022-01-12T19:01:57","slug":"space-heater-safety-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/space-heater-safety-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Portable Heater Safety Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/spaceheaterpic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5055 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/spaceheaterpic-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/spaceheaterpic-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/spaceheaterpic.jpg 339w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), heating equipment, such as portable space heaters, is a leading cause of home fire deaths and half of the home heating equipment fires are reported during the months of December, January, and February.<\/p>\n<p>NFPA suggests these tips for safely operating heating equipment in your home:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater.<\/li>\n<li>Have a three-foot \u201ckid-free zone\u201d around open fires and space heaters.<\/li>\n<li>Never use your oven to heat your home.<\/li>\n<li>Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer\u2019s instructions.<\/li>\n<li>Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.<\/li>\n<li>Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.<\/li>\n<li>Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a way of further making your home safe during the colder months, it is recommended that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are checked each month.
