{"id":4535,"date":"2017-08-25T17:41:40","date_gmt":"2017-08-25T17:41:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/?p=4535"},"modified":"2024-05-09T03:34:03","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T03:34:03","slug":"parkinsons-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/parkinsons-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Parkinson\u2019s Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<p>The Mayo Clinic describes Parkinson\u2019s disease as a progressive disease of the nervous system that causes a tremor, muscular rigidity combined with slow and imprecise movement of the body.\u00a0 It is associated with degeneration of the basal ganglia of the brain and a deficiency of the neurotransmitter dopamine.\u00a0 The disease mostly affects people who are middle-aged and elderly people.<\/p>\n<p>Parkinson&#8217;s signs and symptoms may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tremor &#8211;<\/strong> A tremor, or shaking, usually begins in a limb, often your hand or fingers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slowed movement &#8211;<\/strong>Over time, Parkinson&#8217;s disease may reduce your ability to move and slow your movement, making simple tasks difficult and time-consuming.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rigid muscles &#8211; <\/strong>Muscle stiffness can occur in any part of your body. The stiff muscles can limit your range of motion and cause you pain.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Impaired posture and balance &#8211;<\/strong>Your posture may become stooped, or you may have balance problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Loss of automatic movements &#8211; <\/strong>Decreased ability to perform unconscious movements, including blinking, smiling or swinging your arms when you walk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Speech changes &#8211; <\/strong>You may speak softly, quickly, slur or hesitate before talking.
