{"id":3646,"date":"2016-09-13T19:50:17","date_gmt":"2016-09-13T19:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/?p=3646"},"modified":"2024-05-09T03:34:05","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T03:34:05","slug":"are-you-parenting-an-anxious-child","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/are-you-parenting-an-anxious-child\/","title":{"rendered":"Are You Parenting an Anxious Child?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Similar to adults, children can feel worried and anxious<strong>. <\/strong>\u00a0In fact, feeling anxious about certain things at different stages of their growth is normal.\u00a0 However, if anxiety and worry are chronic, there is a chance that a serious problem is developing.<\/p>\n<p>Early on, younger children may have separation anxiety from their parents. They may become clingy, have difficulty sleeping, wake during the night, start wetting the bed or have nightmares. \u00a0These behaviors are typically temporary and should begin to subside around age two or three.\u00a0 If they persist as your child gets older, you may want to monitor their behavior for signs that are indicative of an anxiety disorder.<\/p>\n<p>Some signs to look out for are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>lack the confidence to try new things or seem unable to face simple, everyday challenges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>find it hard to concentrate<\/li>\n<li>have problems with sleeping or eating<\/li>\n<li>are prone to angry outbursts<\/li>\n<li>have negative thoughts going round and round their head, or keep thinking that bad things are going to happen<\/li>\n<li>start avoiding everyday activities, such as seeing friends, going out in public or attending school<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are many ways to help your child through these worrisome times.\u00a0 Work with your child to recognize what \u201ctriggers\u201d their anxiety and urge them to ask for help when the feel unsure.
