{"id":3412,"date":"2016-06-13T14:37:52","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T14:37:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/?p=3412"},"modified":"2024-05-09T03:34:05","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T03:34:05","slug":"dont-let-fireworks-burn-your-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/newsletter\/dont-let-fireworks-burn-your-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t Let Fireworks BURN Your Summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Summer is synonymous with barbecues, parades and fireworks displays.\u00a0 However, along with these activities are increased visits to the hospital emergency room, especially over the July 4<sup>th<\/sup> holiday.<\/p>\n<p>Fireworks are ILLEGAL in New York State, including the five boroughs and are extremely dangerous when they are not being used by a professional.\u00a0 Fireworks burn at extremely high temperatures and can rapidly burn through clothing and skin.\u00a0 Items such as sparklers are mistakenly thought to be safe when they are actually quite dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>If fireworks ARE LEGAL to buy where you live and you choose to use them, be sure to follow the following safety tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Never allow young children to handle fireworks<\/li>\n<li>Older children should use them only under the close supervision of an adult<\/li>\n<li>Never light fireworks indoors<\/li>\n<li>Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material<\/li>\n<li>Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks<\/li>\n<li>Soak unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding<\/li>\n<li>Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks in case of fire<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This year, have a safe Fourth of July and leave the firework displays to the trained professionals.
