This acquired communication disorder impairs a person\u2019s ability to process language but does not affect their intelligence.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Aphasia\u00a0affects the ability to speak and understand others, causing most people with\u00a0the disorder\u00a0to\u00a0have trouble\u00a0reading and writing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The most common cause of aphasia is stroke. About 25\u00a0to 40 percent\u00a0of stroke survivors are afflicted with aphasia. People with global aphasia\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0read or write. It is often seen\u00a0immediately\u00a0after the patient has suffered a stroke and may rapidly improve if the damage to the brain has not been too extensive. Unlike the other forms of aphasia that result from stroke or brain injury, PPA is caused by Alzheimer\u2019s or frontotemporal lobar degeneration.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A healthcare provider can diagnose aphasia by performing physical and neurological exams. They can also use imaging tests, such as an MRI and a CT scan, to identify what is causing aphasia.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Aphasia\u00a0can also be diagnosed with the help of a speech-language pathologist who can complete a comprehensive language assessment to confirm the presence of aphasia and\u00a0determine\u00a0the\u00a0appropriate course\u00a0of language treatment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The assessment helps find out
