Most people don\u2019t get Legionnaires\u2019 disease, even if they have been around <em>Legionella<\/em> bacteria. But some people are more likely to get sick with a <em>Legionella<\/em> infection than others. You can have an increased risk of getting Legionnaires\u2019 disease if you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are older than 50 years old<\/li>\n<li>Smoke or used to smoke cigarettes<\/li>\n<li>Have a weakened immune system caused by certain medical conditions, such as HIV, diabetes, cancer, and kidney or liver disease, and medications that can compromise your immune system<\/li>\n<li>Have a long-term respiratory illness, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or emphysema<\/li>\n<li>Live in a long-term care facility<\/li>\n<li>Have stayed in a hospital recently<\/li>\n<li>Have had surgery requiring anesthesia recently<\/li>\n<li>Have received an organ transplant recently<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Legionnaires\u2019 disease causes pneumonia-like symptoms that start two to 14 days after exposure to <em>Legionella<\/em>. It can also cause neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of Legionnaires\u2019 disease include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fever (often over 104\u2070F\/40\u2070C)<\/li>\n<li>A dry cough<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Diarrhea<\/li>\n<li>Muscle aches<\/li>\n<li>Headache<\/li>\n<li>Nausea<\/li>\n<li>Confusion<\/li>\n<li>Coughing up blood<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most common ways to diagnose Legionnaires\u2019 disease are with urine and sputum tests. A healthcare provider may use imaging tests, such as an X-ray or CT scan, to get pictures of the inside of your chest. They will also perform a physical exam and ask you about your health and travel history.<\/p>\n<p>Other tests used to diagnose Legionnaires\u2019 disease can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blood tests<\/li>\n<li>Bronchoscopy<\/li>\n<li>Thoracentesis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The treatment for Legionnaires\u2019 disease is antibiotics, either intravenously or in pill form. If you are having trouble breathing, a healthcare provider may give you treatments to help you get enough oxygen.
