Dementia can also result from blocked blood flow to the brain, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients. Without oxygen and nutrients, brain tissue dies.<\/p>\n<p>Progressive dementias get worse over time. Types of dementias that worsen and aren\u2019t reversible include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alzheimer\u2019s disease (the most common cause of dementia)<\/li>\n<li>Vascular dementia<\/li>\n<li>Lewy body dementia<\/li>\n<li>Frontotemporal dementia<\/li>\n<li>Mixed dementia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other disorders linked to dementia include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Huntington\u2019s disease<\/li>\n<li>Traumatic brain injury (TBI)<\/li>\n<li>Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease<\/li>\n<li>Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some causes of dementia-like symptoms can be reversed with treatment, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Infections and immune disorders<\/li>\n<li>Metabolic or endocrine problems<\/li>\n<li>Low levels of certain nutrients<\/li>\n<li>Medication side effects<\/li>\n<li>Subdural bleeding<\/li>\n<li>Brain tumors<\/li>\n<li>Normal-pressure hydrocephalus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many risk factors can contribute to dementia, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Age<\/li>\n<li>Family history<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A healthcare provider must recognize the pattern of loss of skills and function to be able to diagnose the cause of dementia. No single test can diagnose dementia, therefore, a series of tests may be conducted to determine a diagnosis. These tests include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cognitive and neuropsychological tests<\/li>\n<li>Neurological evaluation<\/li>\n<li>Brain scans\n<ul>\n<li>CT or MRI<\/li>\n<li>PET scans<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Laboratory tests<\/li>\n<li>Psychiatric evaluation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most types of dementia can\u2019t be cured, but there are ways to manage your symptoms, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Medications<\/li>\n<li>Therapies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you can schedule an appointment with a doctor at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamaicahospital.org\/clinical-services\/ambulatory-care\/\">Ambulatory Care Center<\/a> by calling (718) 206-7001.
