However, there are many other causes that you should be aware of.<\/p>\n<p>Chest pain that isn\u2019t heart-related is called noncardiac chest pain. Noncardiac chest pain is often described as feeling a painful squeezing or tightness in your chest, or a pressure of heaviness behind your sternum. The pain may be felt on the right or left side or in the middle of your chest.<\/p>\n<p>Many symptoms may occur with noncardiac chest pain including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A sour taste or a sensation of food entering the mouth<\/li>\n<li>Trouble swallowing<\/li>\n<li>Pain that gets better or worse when you change body position<\/li>\n<li>Pain that gets worse when you breathe deeply or cough<\/li>\n<li>Tenderness when you push on your chest<\/li>\n<li>Pain that continues for many hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You may not be able to tell the difference between a heart attack and noncardiac chest pain, for that reason it is important to take any chest pain seriously. If it is sudden or new and lasts longer than five minutes, go to the emergency room. If it goes away after a few minutes, you should see your healthcare provider as soon as possible to determine the cause.<\/p>\n<p>Some causes of noncardiac chest pain include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Digestive issues\n<ul>\n<li>Heartburn<\/li>\n<li>Swallowing disorders<\/li>\n<li>Gallbladder or pancreatic problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Muscle and bone injuries\n<ul>\n<li>Costochondritis<\/li>\n<li>Sore muscles<\/li>\n<li>Injured ribs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Lung-related issues<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Pulmonary Embolism<\/li>\n<li>Pleurisy<\/li>\n<li>Collapsed lung<\/li>\n<li>Pulmonary Hypertension<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Panic attacks<\/li>\n<li>Shingles<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Some risk factors associated with noncardiac chest pain can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High Body Mass Index (BMI)<\/li>\n<li>Smoking or tobacco use<\/li>\n<li>Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)<\/li>\n<li>Anxiety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some immediate tests used to help diagnose the cause of chest pain include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ECG or EKG<\/li>\n<li>Blood tests<\/li>\n<li>Chest X-ray<\/li>\n<li>CT scan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Follow-up tests may need to be done depending on the results of the first tests. They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Echocardiogram<\/li>\n<li>CT scan<\/li>\n<li>Stress tests<\/li>\n<li>Coronary catheterization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Treatment for chest pain varies depending on the cause.
