The exact cause of lupus is unknown; however, it is believed that hormones, genetics, and environmental factors play a role.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone can develop lupus, but some individuals may have a greater risk than others. \u00a0Those with a higher risk are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Black people<\/li>\n<li>Asian people<\/li>\n<li>Hispanic people<\/li>\n<li>People assigned female at birth<\/li>\n<li>People with a family history of lupus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Symptoms of lupus range from mild to severe, and can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Joint pain<\/li>\n<li>Butterfly rash<\/li>\n<li>Mouth sores<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Swollen glands<\/li>\n<li>Inflammation in the brain<\/li>\n<li>Blood clots<\/li>\n<li>Hair loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>People living with lupus often experience periods when their symptoms worsen; this is known as a flare. Flares come and go and are often triggered by anything that causes stress to the body. \u00a0Common triggers may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emotional stress<\/li>\n<li>Pregnancy or giving birth<\/li>\n<li>Infections<\/li>\n<li>Surgery<\/li>\n<li>Physical injuries<\/li>\n<li>Viral illnesses<\/li>\n<li>Severe exposure to ultraviolet rays<\/li>\n<li>Exhaustion (being overworked or not getting enough rest)<\/li>\n<li>Certain medications<\/li>\n<li>Not taking lupus medications regularly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lupus flares often have warning signs such as fever, swollen joints, fatigue, and other associated symptoms. \u00a0However, flares can also occur without symptoms.
