Did you know that asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease? It is more commonly found in children who live in inner cities and more prevalent in African Americans than Caucasians, and in males more often than females.

Asthma often runs in families. Children who have brothers or sisters or parents with asthma often will have the disease themselves.

Additional risk factors for childhood asthma include:
\u2022 Allergies \u2013 environmental or food
\u2022 Frequent respiratory infections
\u2022 Being in an environment with second hand smoke
\u2022 Living in an inner city versus in a suburban area
\u2022 African American
\u2022 Low birth weight baby

Signs and symptoms include:
\u2022 Rapid breathing
\u2022 Dark circles under the eyes
\u2022 Shortness of breath
\u2022 Wheezing
\u2022 Feeling tired or weak
\u2022 Chest pain on exertion
