Jamaica Hospital and Community Leaders Celebrate the Grand Opening of the Ferrara Family Center fo
Jun 20,2017
Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is proud to announce that it will officially re-open its Hospice Care Unit after undergoing a complete renovation.

Last year, a $1.3 million capital campaign was initiated by the Hospital’s leadership in an effort to facilitate the renovation. Thanks to the generosity of several donors, including Board Member Joseph Ferrara, the namesake of the unit, the hospital has successfully completed construction.

Joining Jamaica Hospital in celebrating the completion of the project and grand opening of Ferrara Family Center for Hospice Care are elected officials, key community leaders and others who support the hospital’s efforts to provide essential services to the community.

The opening of the unit has been highly anticipated by many in the community as it will serve to offer Queens residents quality, end-of-life care in a family-oriented environment. Many upgraded amenities have been provided for patients and families that promote serenity, privacy and will allow them to feel more at home during a difficult time. Additionally, the unit offers comforts such as private and spacious suites for patients, family meeting rooms and a relaxing family lounge that offers loved ones a space to gather decompress or reflect.

Jamaica Hospital’s Hospice Care Unit first opened in 2010. It was the first hospital-based hospice care program in the borough. The unit provided a service that was lacking in the community- access to comprehensive, end of life care, close to home.

Since its opening, the Hospital’s Hospice Care Unit has continuously provided compassionate comfort care to countless patients facing end of life. Its staff has earned a stellar reputation for providing exemplary clinical services while meeting the spiritual, cultural and social needs of patients. Today, the organization remains as one of two hospitals in Queens to offer hospital-based hospice care.

Jamaica Hospital’s staff is very appreciative of the community’s positive reception of the Ferrara Family Center for Hospice Care and the services it will provide. “It is our goal that our patients and their loved ones receive compassion and comfort during a time that can be very difficult,” said Dr. Alan Roth; Chairman of Family Medicine and Chief of Palliative Care Medicine. Dr. Roth continued “We will continue to apply this approach in a new, modern and familial environment.”
