NYPD and Jamaica Hospital Trauma Division Collaborate To Reduce Accidents Caused By Dangerous Drivin

<br>WHAT: April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and in an effort to reduce traffic deaths and injuries; Jamaica Hospital, NYPD Chief Tom Chan of the Transportation Bureau and Queens local 102, 107 and 113 precincts will be hosting a community outreach event to raise awareness on the dangers of distracted driving.
<br>WHY: In New York City the most common reason for vehicle-related injuries and fatalities is distracted driving. Through education and the promotion of initiatives such as Vision Zero and Safer Streets Queens, we can drive these numbers down.

<br>It is estimated that every two hours a vehicle kills or seriously injures a New Yorker. Each year Jamaica Hospital Medical Center’s Level 1 Trauma team responds to over 1,500 trauma activations. A large percentage of these injuries are the result of a motor vehicle accident or a pedestrian being struck. According to the NYPD, “dangerous driver choices are the primary cause or a contributing factor in 70% of pedestrian fatalities.”

<br>In response to these numbers Jamaica Hospital and the NYPD are doing their part to help reduce accidents that are caused by dangerous driving.

<br>NYPD local precincts play an integral role in our communities by educating residents about safe driving. Vision Zero, Street Team Officers are often seen in neighborhoods engaging residents while handing out safe driving and pedestrian safety reading materials. The department has also placed a portable variable message sign along the Van Wyck Expressway close to the hospital to remind motorists to slow down and abide by the City’s speed limit.

<br>Jamaica Hospital’s Trauma Division actively conducts research on motor vehicle and pedestrian safety that is utilized in industry publications, as a resource for the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and in other community outreach efforts. The division was awarded funding by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee in 2015 and 2016 for their Safer Street Queens project. The main goal of this project is to reduce the total number of pedestrian and bicyclists struck by motor vehicles.

<br>On April 25th Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and the NYPD local precincts will continue their efforts by collaborating to achieve the mutual goal of making Queens’ streets safer for all those who share the road. Members from both organizations will host a Distracted Driver Awareness Month event in the main lobby of Jamaica Hospital.
