Jamaica Hospital Announces the Opening Of the Thomas Santucci Jr., MD Cardiovascular Interventional Suite

Jul 18,2018

July 18, 2018 (Jamaica, NY) — Jamaica Hospital Medical Center sits in the heart of a community that is currently experiencing a steady rise in the rates of people diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. “There is a significant prevalence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and obesity in our area, all of which contribute to the growing incidence of all types of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes,” explains Dr. Robert Mendelson, Director of Cardiology and Chairman of the Department of Medicine.
It is anticipated that admissions for cardiac disease to Jamaica Hospital will increase by 12% in the next five years and stroke admission by 11% during that period. As part of its efforts to meet the growing needs of its population, and to provide innovative life-saving and preventative interventions, the hospital will open a new, state-of -the-art, cardiovascular interventional suite.
The Thomas Santucci Jr., MD Cardiovascular Interventional Suite, named in honor of the late and beloved cardiologist and former Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Jamaica Hospital, covers 6500 square feet of space and will include two interventional labs, a six-bed recovery unit, a preparation area, as well as viewing, treatment and examination rooms.
The facility is equipped with groundbreaking technologies in cardiac and stroke care, allowing doctors to perform more complex and advanced procedures. Both labs feature Siemens Artis Zee Ceiling- Mounted systems which provide high patient-positioning flexibility, affording doctors easier and full-body access to patients needing emergency resuscitative care.
The suite will also feature a Biplane Unit to permit neurointerventional procedures – a significant advancement in the treatment of strokes. The emerging technology will allow doctors to perform endovascular neurologic procedures- a new service that will be provided to the community.
In 2017, Jamaica Hospital performed over 625 diagnostic catheterizations, 342 percutaneous coronary interventions and hundreds of additional cardiac-related procedures. The hospital treats approximately 100 stroke patients each month. As the closest hospital to JFK International Airport to offer a cardiac catheterization lab and Level 1 Trauma Center; Jamaica Hospital will also be first in line to provide emergency cardiovascular care to countless travelers.
“Given the high volume of cardiovascular and stroke cases received by the hospital, the new Thomas Santucci Jr., MD Cardiovascular Interventional Suite will certainly be of great benefit to a significant number of people,” shared Jamaica Hospital President and CEO Bruce J. Flanz. “Our primary focus is providing our patients with the highest standards in cardiovascular care. The technologies we utilize will enable us to perform more immediate, life-saving diagnostic procedures and treatments to thousands each year.”
